The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has been officially granted Observer Status by the United Nations’ General Assembly. The decision was taken on 13th December during the 71st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
In an official letter to BCCI, ICC has expressed its gratitude for the tremendous support which the Chamber provided for the campaign over the last three months. “Your intense contributions made it possible to achieve this historic milestone in ICC history, which is also a tremendous example of the power of our global network of national committees, chambers and members”, the letter reads.
As previously announced, in October 2016 with a letter to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria, BCCI expressed its motives in support of ICC’s candidacy and insisted official actions to be taken by the Ministry using the respective diplomatic channels.
This is a historic achievement for ICC and one which provides a unique platform for the world business organisation to represent its members in the world’s greatest international forum. ICC is the only private-sector organisation to have been granted Observer Status at the General Assembly in the history of the United Nations. The list of UN observers is highly restricted and features principally intergovernmental organisations.
