Bulgaria's trade with Canada has grown steadily in recent years

H.E. Annick Goulet, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada to Bulgaria based in Bucharest, visited the BCCI and talked with President Tsvetan Simeonov about the possibilities for expanding trade and economic ties between the two countries. Geneviève Bourget, Commercial Counselor at the Embassy of Canada also took part in the meeting.

Ambassador Goulet noted that there is untapped potential in the bilateral trade relations. Tsvetan Simeonov agreed with this opinion and suggested that the BCCI, together with the Embassy of Canada, renew the information events on the benefits and opportunities offered by the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the EU (CETA). BCCI has already organized 3 consecutive presentations of the agreement, carried out with the assistance of the Canadian Business Network in Bulgaria and other partners.

The CETA agreement came into force in part in 2017. Since then, trade between Bulgaria and Canada has grown steadily, as follows: + 29% in 2018; + 21% in 2019; + 46% in 2020. The significant increase in 2020 reflects a significant increase in imports (+ 105%), supported by a steady increase in exports (+ 6.8%).
