Trade between Hong Kong and Bulgaria in 2011 displayed a promising trend

More than 120 Bulgarian businessmen are looking for reliable and trustworthy partners among Hong Kong companies

On 20 March 2012, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council organized a seminar in Sofia to encourage more Bulgarian companies to explore the business potential in the region and to take advantage of the successful business opportunities it provides.

The seminar was opened by the Deputy Representative of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels Ms. Hinny Lam. She highlighted the unique principle “one state, two systems” which has been successfully applied since 1997. This year Hong Kong marks its 15th anniversary as Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. The region enjoys a high degree of autonomy and freedoms, as well as free trade, free flow of capitals, information and convertible currency.

Gabriela Dimitrova, Director International Cooperation and International Organizations of the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomed the participants in the forum – more that 120 Bulgarian business representatives. According to Ms. Dimitrova in a time of crisis, Bulgarian companies are looking for reliable and trustworthy partners. They find such partners among Hong Kong companies. Since 2009 trade between Bulgaria and Hong Kong has increased, and Bulgarian exports have grown by an average of 66 %. For 11 months of 2011, trade turnover amounted to USD 120 million.

Boryana Mincheva, Director International Cooperation of the Bulgarian Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion Agency also took part in the seminar. She reminded that many foreign companies use Hong Kong as a platform to expand their business with Asia. Foreign companies working in Hong Kong compete with the local companies on equal footing and benefiting from the Economic Partnership Agreement between Hong Kong and mainland China under the same conditions.

The Deputy Representative of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Brussels Ms. Hinny Lam stressed that in addition to trade in wine, Bulgarian companies are provided with excellent opportunities in six actively promoted sectors of industry – testing and certification, medical services, innovation and technology, culture and arts, eco-industry and education.

The Director of Hong Kong Trade Development Council Mr. Wing Sham announced that in 2011 trade between Hong Kong and Bulgaria displayed a promising trend. Last year trade turnover grew by 19 % and reached USD 113 million. Bulgarian exports for Hong Kong exceeded those of Hong Kong for Bulgaria of 2010. The most traded product groups include telecommunication equipment and parts, as well as electrical components.

An invitation was extended to all participants to visit and take part in the trade fairs organized in Hong Kong. Two Bulgarian companies which attended similar events in 2011 were presented. Their representatives shared positive experience in doing business with Hong Kong. As a whole, Bulgarian participants were impressed with the excellent organization of the events, the enormous scale and great interest on the part of local partners, the dynamic stay and usefulness of the visit.
