BCCI will provide Bulgarian tour agencies with a new product related to religious tourism
Since 2011, the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has been developing the “RECULTIVATUR” project, which aims to establish an interconnected system of religious and cultural sites and cultural routes in order to stimulate the development of religious tourism. On the basis of the gathered information and using the geographic information system (GIS), Bulgarian tour agents will be able to easily and quickly develop tourist packages including cultural monuments with religious character – monasteries, churches, and other typical religious sites.
GIS combines software and hardware solutions for visualization of spatial data. The complicated GIS technology will store in one data base the information about religious sites gathered by each of the countries - participants in the project, namely Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Romania and Hungary.
At present BCCI has developed a data base of over 4000 religious sites to be embedded in the system, which is an effective way to promote Bulgaria’s religious heritage on national and European level. Bulgarian tour agents will be able to benefit from the GIS functions and to expand the scope of their professional activities.
The setting up of an International Cultural Tourism Development Agency, in whose network Bulgaria will be included, is forthcoming. The Agency will help develop religious tourism by promoting specific sites, services and cultural routes.
