Meeting with the President of the Turkish – Bulgarian Business Council
The President of BCCI Tsvetan Simeonov met with the President of the joint Turkish – Bulgarian Business Council, Yalcin Egemen. The need to reschedule the regional Turkish – Greek – Bulgarian Forum, which was planned to take place in April in Canakkale, Turkey for June 2012 was discussed.
The postponement is necessary because of the harsh economic situation in Greece. Business representatives from Turkey, Greece and Bulgaria interested in the sectors of agriculture, food industry, construction, machine-building, tourism and others, are expected to take part in the Forum. If interested, companies from other sectors of industry can attend the event as well, the organizers will do their best to find suitable partners.
During the meeting the potential for development of religious tourism in the two countries was discussed. Mr. Simeonov presented the results of a European project of the BCCI, within which a data base of over 4000 religious sites in Bulgaria was developed. They will be embedded in a special system, which is an effective way to promote Bulgaria’s religious heritage on national and European level. One quarter of the sites included in the data base are mosques.
Facilitation of the visa regime for Turkish citizens visiting Bulgaria was also noted. According to Mr. Egemen, there is still room for improvement. He gave an example that in 2011 around 750 000 Bulgarian tourists visited Turkey and only 50 000 Turkish citizens visited Bulgaria as a tourist destination. If the regime is further eased, the number of Turkish tourists in Bulgaria may increase several times.
Turkish companies have expressed interest in renting and purchasing agricultural land due to the large price differences in the two neighbouring countries.
Mr. Egemen informed that Turkey achieved 9 % economic growth in 2011, and the expectations for 2012 are between 4 - 5 %.
