Henry Malosse was nominated for President of the European Economic and Social Committee in the period 2012 – 2015

In Brussels the preliminary elections for President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) were held.

By a majority of 65 votes to 35 and 2 abstentions Mr. Henry Malosse, representative of the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry was nominated. Mr. Malosse was the former President of the Employers’ Group of the EESC and beat the representative of BUSINESSEUROPE Mr. Philippe de Buck.

The former Vice-President of the EESC Mr. Jacek Krawczyk from Poland was nominated for President of the Employers’ Group of the European Economic and Social Committee. The election will be completed during the upcoming plenary session.

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is a consultative body of the European Union. It was established in order to provide the major EU institutions (the European Commission, the Council and the European Parliament) with expert opinion on EU policies and proposals. The EESC may also issue opinions on its own initiative to raise the awareness of decision-making bodies about certain issues. One of the main goals is to provide a bridge between organised civil society and EU institutions. The EESC helps boost the role of civil society organizations by furthering structured dialogue with those organizations in EU Member States and other countries worldwide.

The members of the EESC represent a wide circle of economic, social and cultural interests in their respective countries. They are divided into three groups: employers, employees and a third group of various other interests (such as farmers, consumer groups, environmentalists, family associations, NGOs and so on). They provide the link between the European Union and civil society organizations in the Member States.
