Information day about the JEREMIE initiative held at BCCI

The Innovation Council with BCCI held an information day about the JEREMIE initiative with the participation of managers of funds established under the JEREMIE initiative, representatives of the European Investment Fund, as well as members of the Innovation Council with BCCI, the Council of Sectorial Organizations with BCCI, scientists from the Bulgarian Academy of Science, universities, Federation of the Scientific - Engineering Unions in Bulgaria, Union of Inventors in Bulgaria.
The JEREMIE initiative (part of Operational Programme “Competitiveness”) or the so-called “Joint European Resources for Micro to Medium Enterprises” is one of the tools for EU funds absorption (European Regional Development Fund, European Social Fund and the Cohesion Fund). The initiative was developed jointly by the European Commission and the European Investment Fund. JEREMIE aims to offer EU Member States the opportunity to use part of their EU Structural Funds to finance small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Georgi Stoev, Vice-President of BCCI reminded that the JEREMIE initiative is expected to give a new chance to SMEs and hoped that this initiative would eventually have a positive result. Small and medium-sized enterprises, which constitute the largest part of our membership base and of Bulgarian business as a whole, hope to have better and direct access to European financing. Mr. Stoev talked about a 4-year project under the 7th Framework Programme which was presented the previous day about technological assessment of public policy. According to Mr. Stoev, this is an important topic which in the future may be considered and taken on by the Innovation Council with BCCI because in the European Union, as well as worldwide this is one of the strategic means for defining the technological development strategies of the respective countries.
For example, Mr. Stoev said that in the USA a similar council for technological policy was established with the US Congress in 1973 to determine all future main directions for the development and financing of technologies in the USA. Meanwhile, a research of their influence and future effect on the social climate in the world was carried out.
According to Maxim Gurwitz from ELEVEN Investment Fund, Bulgaria is undoubtedly the best place in the EU to do business. Here the taxes are very low, but also the expenses are smaller. If there is a world market for an idea or a product, Bulgaria is the most advantageous place in Europe to manufacture it. This is a huge advantage which is not fully used. Bulgaria is among the top 5 best developed countries in the EU as far as education is concerned. The percentage of educated young people in Bulgaria is very high. Of course, there are some problems as well – according to most of the criteria Bulgaria is the poorest EU member state and perhaps one of the most serious problems is the high level of immigration. 8% of the population left the country in the last 30 years.
We invest in teams which deal in ideas and solutions for online and mobile business. These are business models related to providing services over the Internet. Your idea, our money and in the end there is your business. This is the procedure we use, Maxim Gurwitz from ELEVEN concluded.
Mr. Stanislav Sirakov and Mr. Rumen Iliev presented LAUNCHub Fund also established under the JEREMIE initiative.
