BCCI organizes Austrian – Bulgarian Economic Forum

“The Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and our partners from the Austrian Economic Chambers (WKO) aim to bring businesses together and support their successful cooperation. I hope that today’s forum will show the results of our past work and will launch new joint projects and business initiatives”, said the President of BCCI Tsvetan Simeonov and leader of the Bulgarian business delegation at the opening of the Austrian – Bulgarian Economic Forum which is currently taking place in Vienna.

The forum is attended by 36 representatives of Bulgarian business accompanying the President of Bulgaria Rosen Plevneliev during his working visit to Austria. The forum is organized by the Austrian Economic Chambers (WKO) and the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, with the assistance of the embassies of the two countries and brings together more than 300 Austrian companies with significant interest in Southeastern Europe and especially in Bulgaria. It was opened by the President of WKO Dr. Christoph Leitl. Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev addressed the businessmen from the two countries stressing that cooperation between Bulgaria and Austria is expanding with each passing year.

Austria is the second largest investor in Bulgaria after the Netherlands, and trade turnover between the two countries increased more than 5 times over the past 10 years. Austrian investments in Bulgaria are smart and well made, President Plevneliev explained. He added that the business climate in the country is improving and gave Bulgaria as a positive example of successful negotiation of EU funds.

Bulgaria has the lowest state debt in the EU and will end the year with a budget deficit below 1%. The Head of State said that the two countries wish to strengthen their cooperation for the future development of the Danube region.

In 2013 opportunities to expand navigation in all sections of the Danube River will be discussed, as well as the interaction between Black Sea and Danube ports. The Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Ivaylo Moskovski presented Bulgaria’s priorities in the field of transport and IT.

Bulgarian Minister of Regional Development and Public Works Lilyana Pavlova made a presentation on theme “Strategic development of Bulgaria and challenges”. Borislav Stefanov, Director of Invest Bulgaria Agency and Dr. Michael Angerer, Commercial Counsellor at the Austrian Embassy in Bulgaria provided up-to-date economic information and discussed the conditions for investment and development of tourism in Bulgaria. Leading Austrian investors in Bulgaria also shared their experience.

More than 80 bilateral meetings will take place during the forum. During the visit bilateral agreement in the water sector to the amount of EUR 60 million was signed.

Bulgaria considers Austria a traditionally important trade and economic partner. Trade relations have registered growth since 2009. In 2011 trade turnover increased by 22.1% as compared to the previous year.

On the first day of their Austrian visit, the Bulgarian business delegation visited a railcar factory and took part in a panel discussion at the European Commission Representation in Vienna on “European perspectives – challenges and chances”. A meeting with representatives of the Bulgarian community in Austria organized by Ambassador Elena Shekerletova is expected to take place.
President Plevneliev said that “Bilateral trade turnover in the past three years grew from EUR 800 million in 2009 to EUR 1 billion in 2011 despite the world economic crisis. I think fivefold increase in bilateral trade is possible by 2020.” The President thanked Austria for letting many Bulgarian into the country after the political changes in Austria to complete their education. “These highly educated Bulgarians returned as experts to our country to help build a new modern Bulgaria”, President Plevneliev concluded.
