BCCI presented the classification “TOP-100 companies leading in the Bulgarian economy in 2011”

At a press conference held on 21 September 2012, the 14th consecutive edition of the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry “TOP 100 – Companies leading in the economy of Bulgaria in 2011” was presented. In the process of its preparation the data from the annual financial reports of more than 5340 companies were examined, which account for around 76.94% of the country’s GDP. 70% of the companies ranked among the first ten in the various classifications are members of the BCCI.

The President of BCCI, Tsvetan Simeonov emphasized that the city of Sofia, the Region of Sofia and the South-West Planning Region produce more than 50% of the country’s GDP. “The first conclusion is that the distribution of the economy in the country is uneven. The competent authorities must make their own finances and programmes. We will not fail to remind them that it is necessary to take measures for a more balanced distribution of the economy in the country. From our classification it is evident that 1 – 2 enterprises in a specific region can work well even in a small town and occupy the same position as companies from the cities - regional centers”, Simeonov said.

The top 100 most successful companies included in the classifications were selected according to standard criteria for dinamysm and profitability. The edition contains the top 100 most successful companies ranked according to:
Alteration of sales revenue in 2011 as compared to 2010,
Maximum value of profit on 100 BGN Equity in 2011,
Maximum value of profit on 100 BGN sales revenue in 2011.
The classifications made according to the three criteria include only companies which have ended 2011 with a profit and net sales revenue for 2010 exceeding BGN 100 000.

Besides, the edition contains a classification of the top 50 Bulgarian companies ranked according to the alteration of the financial result in 2011, which have covered significant losses from 2010.

Another classification included in the publication has a regional aspect and presents the top 10 companies with maximum sales revenue for 2011 in the national planning regions.

Main conclusions about the Bulgarian economy in 2011 derived from the classification of BCCI:
When in 2011 the economy of the country registered a slight growth of 1.7%, the top 100 companies with highest sales revenue reached 252%. Most of these companies are from the services sector – 48%, but what is interesting is that in a period when there was a drop in construction, companies from the sector had a share of 13% which is higher than any other separate industry.
The top 100 companies classified according to maximum value of profit on invested own equity, reached an average of BGN 112 profit on BGN 100 equity. The record is BGN 271 profit on BGN 100 equity. The leading sectors are: trade (37%), services (28%) and industry (23%), mainly represented by the textile industry.
In the third classification of companies according to the value of profit on 100 BGN sales revenue, companies from the services sector (35%) and industry (21%) exceeded the number of trading companies, which occupied the leading positions in the previous classifications. From the industry sector, companies manufacturing machinery and equipment occupy the largest share. Companies reach an average of BGN 50 profit on on 100 BGN sale revenue, and the average profit in 2011 is BGN 1.2 million.
Micro companies are the most dynamic and profitable companies in Bulgaria with a total share in the three classifications of 73%. Medium-sized and small companies are 26%, and big companies – 1%. Regionally, the companies from Sofia occupy the largest share (40% of all companies), followed by the large cities such as Plovdiv, Ruse, Varna and Stara Zagora.
Industrial companies and mainly companies producing foods, beverages and tobacco products, as well as textile companies are the ones than in 2011 registered highest positive financial results thus compensating for losses suffered in 2010.
Obviously these are the leaders in the economy, and unless the situation changes abruptly, the tendency for recovery of the economy will be preserved.
Companies included in the classification and especially SMEs give us hope by showing that Bulgarian economy is alive and they are its main engine of growth.

Surprisingly, agriculture showed good results and potential, despite the uneven allocation of subsidies, but it needs more attention: agriculture has a share of 15% among companies with highest profit on sales revenue and a share of 6% among companies in the classification for overcoming the negative financial results from 2010.
