Ambassdor Rahman got acquainted with the history and activity of BCCI in details. He expressed hope that the good trade and economic relations between Bulgaria and Bangladesh from the 1970s and 80s would be restored. After the independence of Bangladesh was announced in 1971 and admitted by Bulgaria in 1972 the two countries did barter trade exchanges of high value. Mr. Simeonov confirmed that bilateral trade volume in the last 10 years has been discouraging and there is room for cooperation to use the untapped economic potential.

Bilateral trade volume ranges from USD 2 million to USD 9 million. In 2011 Bulgaria mainly exported to Bangladesh plasma, anti-serums and blood components; yarn of synthetic staple fibers; boards, panels, consoles and other similar products; chemical wood pulp; food supplements for animals, etc. The main commodities imported from Bangladesh in 2011 included crude and unprocessed tobacco; jute yarn; textiles and knitwear, etc.

The guest informed about his country’s proposal to establish an Intergovernmental Committee in order to solve the open questions at governmental level. With regard to intensifying the exchange of information which may be of relevance to the business, Mr. Simeonov gave the Ambassador a Draft Cooperation Agreement with the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry. He also proposed to organize an event in the spring of 2013 in order to present the economy of Bangladesh to Bulgarian businessmen.

Ambassador Rahman has already held meetings with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the President of the Republic of Bulgaria and a visit to the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism is envisaged.
