BCCI took part in a mediation conference

The Professional Association of Mediators in Bulgaria (PAMB) in cooperation with Integrierte Mediation Germany and the European Association of Judges for Mediation (GEMME) organized an international conference on cross-border mediation on 1st and 2nd November in Sofia.

The Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry as a pioneer in the field of mediation in our country and institution with long-standing tradition in the field of applying alternative methods for dispute dissolution also took part in the Conference. The Mediation Center with BCCI has been working since 2005.

BCCI regarded the conference as an opportunity to exchange experience and share good practices. The Chamber promoted among its members, business circles and society the advantages of mediation as an efficient, time and money-saving approach for resolution of disputes out-of-court.

The Conference was part of project “European network of mediators for resolution of cross-border disputes” funded by the European Commission.

During the conference a wide range of professionals (judges, mediators, professors, businessmen and politicians) presented the opportunities for cross-border mediation in case of commercial, family, inter-cultural and other disputes; disputes in the field of intellectual property; new approaches for resolution of disputes, including restorative justice and on-line mediation.

World-known Bulgarian and European specialists with significant experience in the field of mediation were lecturers at the conference: Diana Wallis, former Vice President of the European Parliament and representatives of the International Mediation Institute; Ales Zalar, former Minister of Justice of Slovenia; Srdan Simac, Judge, President of the Croatian Association of Mediators; Dragos Calin, Judge at Bucharest Court of Appeal, Romania; Roberta Regazzoni, Chamber of Commerce Milan, Arbitration Chamber – Milan, Italy; Svilena Dimitrova, PAMB; Prof. Dobrinka Chankova, South-West University “Neofit Rilski”, Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria.

The development of alternative methods for dispute resolution and mediation in particular is a lasting European policy, which occupies one of the top spots in programme “Fundamental rights and justice” of the European Commission. For the judiciary this means applying unified European standards in legislation; for the business – favourable environment for development and broader opportunities to overcome discrepancies and establish beneficial cooperation; for the civil society – better access to legislation and a step towards meeting the democratic values of Europe 2020.
