Declaration by the business to the governments of the Balkan states

On 24 February 2011 in Sofia, the General Meeting of the Association of Balkan Chambers /ABC/, presided by BCCI’s President Mr. Tsvetan Simeonov, took place with a very lively discussion and comments about the economic situation in the region, the progress of some of the countries and the hardships experienced by others. The national unions and chambers of commerce of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, FYROM, Romania, Serbia, Turkey and Montenegro are members of ABC. The participants in the meeting were greeted by Mr. Evgeni Angelov, Deputy Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism. They saw a presentation on the investment climate in Bulgaria as compared to the situation in the neighbouring states.
During the discussions, several important topics were outlined and included in the Declaration signed at the end of the meeting, such as the desire of the Balkan business for the political and social tension in the countries of Northern Africa and the Mediterranean region to be reduced; the problems existing in these regions to be solved in order not to jeopardize the economic relations; and a closer cooperation between the Balkan states to be pursued.
In a declaration addressed to the respective governments of the Balkan states, the ABC representatives insisted special measures to be taken by governments against corruption and shadow economy in order to reduce them to tolerable levels. They expect the administrative barriers and burdens for business to be reduced, including the tariff and non-tariff barriers to be removed in accordance with the CEFTA Agreement 2006, and a more favourable environment for the economic development of entrepreneurship to be created. The Presidents of the Balkan chambers agreed that the increase of direct and indirect taxes and social security contributions must discontinue, and that measures to reduce unemployment and to improve the road infrastructure in the region must be taken.
The participants in the General Meeting of the Association of Balkan Chambers took courage from the positive development of the Turkish economy and drew on the country’s experience in reducing unemployment. The representatives of Greece, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro also shared their experience and positive practices.
ABC’s Programme for 2011 was developed. The cooperation between ABC, the Regional Council for Cooperation and the joint DIHK-CEFTA project was discussed.
Later that day, the participants in the meeting visited the SECURITY Exhibition and met with representatives of the Embassies of the Balkan states to Sofia.
