A new window for business between Bulgaria and Macedonia
The Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry held a meeting with the management of the newly established Macedonian-Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce based in Skopje.
The President of the Chamber Mr. Borislav Zahariev, Executive Director of Capital Bank - Macedonia and its Director Mr. Lyubomir Yosifovski, IT businessman, presented the new Chamber’s programme and priorities to Mr. Tsvetan Simeonov, President of the BCCI. The Commercial Counselor at the Bulgarian Embassy in Skopje, Mr. Ivan Zherkov, who is among the initiators of the Macedonian-Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and a member of its Supervisory Council, also took part in the meeting.
The aim of the meeting was to establish close cooperation with the new organisation, which was founded on February 24, 2011 in Skopje by 51 founders – businessmen, in the presence of representatives of the government, the diplomatic corps and the media. The Macedonian-Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce intends to promote bilateral economic relations, to assist businesses from both countries, and to improve the position of Macedonian business on the Bulgarian and EU market.
The Commercial Counselor, Mr. Zherkov, drew attention to the state of relations between the two countries, such as the lack of good roads and direct railway line, the need to exchange more business news between the two countries, e.g. Macedonian newspapers to be available in Bulgaria and vice versa. However, Bulgaria is Macedonia’s fourth biggest trade partner, and Macedonia takes the fourth place among Bulgaria’s non-EU trade partners. The trade turnover between the two countries in 2010 exceeded $ 700 million and the trade relations are a fact despite the conditions described. Therefore, if efforts are made to improve these relations, significant results will be achieved.
According to BCCI’s President, Mr. Tsvetan Simeonov, the establishment of the Macedonian-Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce will open a new window for business between Bulgaria and Macedonia. He said that the establishment of the council was an idea of the entrepreneurs, which means that they are ready for this step and need the support of an institution like the BCCI. The cooperation between the BCCI and the Macedonian-Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce as well as the relations with the National Chamber of Commerce of Macedonia were discussed during the meeting. The parties outlined the future steps (meetings and events) which they will take in order to improve the bilateral relations.
Our commercial counselor in Skopje informed the participants that on February 21, 2011 a joint Contact Center for police and customs cooperation at Gyueshevo checkpoint was launched by the Ministers of Interior of Bulgaria and Macedonia – Mr. Tsvetan Tsvetanov and Ms. Gordana Jankulovska. The Ministers signed an agreement to expand bilateral cooperation.
