As was already announced, the Council of Presidents of the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry adopted a Declaration for temporary suspension of increase of household waste fees. The position on this important topic was adopted by the Council of Presidents of the Regional Chambers during their meeting in Vidin, and was sent to the Chairperson of the National Assembly, the Prime Minister and the Chairperson of the National Association of Municipalities.
BCCI’s President, Mr. Tsvetan Simeonov said that at the moment Municipal Councils must react as quickly as possible. The business is disappointed with the implementation of the otherwise good idea to give more power to the local authorities, in the hope that they would resolve this problem more quickly and dynamically, being closer to their voters and more interested in winning their approval. Unfortunately, none of the local authorities lived up to the trust and responsibilities granted them by the voters. They still have time to rectify this mistake and to lower the municipal waste fees at least to last-year’s levels.
The state is not free from responsibility on this matter either, because when the Parliament discussed this issue, serious concerns were expressed that local authorities would not manage to at least keep the same waste collection and management fees. If the local authorities do not react adequately, we would like their indifference to the problems of the business to be corrected by the law and the opportunity to transfer the burden to the business to be taken away from them.
It is of great importance that a mechanism is adopted, which will make it possible to actually measure pollution and to link it to the payment of specific sums. This is the only way to make companies fully utilize their materials and packages, which as we all know is a constant problem of Bulgarian economy, and on the other hand, to make companies pollute nature less. It is obvious that in a market economy only the market leverages work efficiently.
