BCCI: There is potential in the trade and economic relations with Russia, which means to explore other sectors beside energy production

A business delegation organized by the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and led by its President Tsvetan Simeonov accompanied the Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism on his Moscow trip, which coincided with the 14th session of the Intergovernmental Bulgarian-Russian Committee for Economic and Scientific and Technological Cooperation.
The Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry highly estimates the visit and intends to make it important for Bulgarian business as well for several reasons.
Firstly, for a certain period of time our country was focused mainly on European integration and the Russian market which is so important to us was somehow left behind.
Secondly, in the past several years the government and companies focused their attention solely on energy deals, which was a rather one-sided approach. The fact that we used to maintain very close and balanced trade relations with Russia shows that there still is potential in the trade and economic relations, an opportunity which requires us to think and work not only in the direction of energy objects, but also for balancing the trade between the two countries. Of course, this would also mean that Bulgaria as a member-state should use all the opportunities that EU-membership provides and negotiate more favourable conditions for Bulgarian goods in Russia.
After the meetings we were left with the impression that there still is very solvent demand in Russia, an element which should also be used. The positive image of Bulgarian food and drink industry hasn’t lost its appeal and it is only proper that we continue to develop it as fully as possible. The Bulgarian delegation had very successful meetings with the Moscow Chamber of Commerce and Industry with which cooperation will be developed following the rules for cooperation between the chambers of commerce.
However, we should remember that Russia is not limited to Moscow only. That is why it was no accident that the business delegation had meetings with companies and NGOs from other Russian regions such as Penzenska, Arahangelska, Stavropolska, Tumenska, Feratovska, and Nijninovgorotska Oblast. All these regions are interested in cooperating with Bulgarian companies.
BCCI signed another important cooperation agreement – with the State Registration Chamber with the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation which will help resolve some worries that we had due to the large number of newly-registered Russian companies after the changes. We were worried that Bulgarian companies may negotiate and sign contracts with known or unknown Russian partners that may turn out to be in insolvency or may fail to keep the contract terms. The agreement that we signed with the State Registration Chamber allows us in very short terms to check Russian companies thoroughly with the help of our Russian partners, which will guarantee reliability of the business contacts. The check-up of the State Registration Chamber will give additional security when signing deals and conducting trade with Russian companies because it is thorough, versatile and uses various sources beside the official ones.
Another positive finding was of extreme interest to us. In contract to the decreasing number of fairs and exhibitions organized in Bulgaria due to the crisis, Russian statistics show a high level of interest to fairs and exhibitions.
BCCI signed a cooperation agreement with EXPOCENTRE-Moscow, which is the largest international exhibition center in the system of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation. EXPOCENTRE will guarantee very favourable conditions to Bulgarian companies which sign up for Russian exhibitions via the BCCI. EXPOCENTRE uses very modern methods for evaluation of the effects of fairs and exhibitions, which they organize following the rules of the world practice. We agreed that in very short terms they will share their experience with us and probably we will start using these evaluation methods in our work as well.
Last but not least, there was an obvious interest in Bulgarian real property, which is confirmed by the interest in Bulgarian tourist resorts. Our state bodies and authorities will have to work more actively to support this sector by easing the visa regime to the possible limits.
