Tsvetan Simeonov: “We must do justice to the first license for mutual trade with Croatia under the Dubrovnik Charter”

Dubrovnik Charter from 1230

“Together with the Bulgarian government we will try to maintain favourable business conditions in our country, but the business also needs to seek actively European funding, new partners and new markets”, BCCI’s President Mr. Tsvetan Simeonov said during a business forum in the Republic of Croatia. The Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Croatian Chamber of Economy organized a joint business forum in order to encourage the business relations between the two countries.
“Politicians’ role is to open doors and the role of manufacturers and businessmen is to guarantee and deliver the expected quality and the contracted quantity. The business has another goal – to make profit outside its own country”, the Bulgarian Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism, Traycho Traykov said during the business forum in Zagreb. According to him, Croatia’s upcoming EU-accession will increase the opportunities for partnership within the Community and will encourage companies from both countries to expand their contacts and investment activity.
Within the business forum 30 investment projects open for funding in Croatia were presented, amounting to €13,75 billion. One of them is for a new terminal of Zagreb Airport, which will be constructed with public private partnership. In the longrun, new railways are expected to be constructed and several projects for thermal power stations to be completed by 2020. Over €25 billion were invested in Croatia between 1993 and 2010, which puts the country in third place in the region after Bulgaria and Estonia.
The Minister of Economy, Labour and Entrepreneurship of the Republic of Croatia, Mr. Đuro Popijač said that he appreciates highly Bulgaria’s support during the EU membership talks. The country has to close 5 more chapters and expects Bulgaria’s support.
“The Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is a bit younger than the Croatian Chamber of Economy, which was established in 1852 and that is why we still have some things to learn”, Mr. Simeonov said. “Going even further back, however, we must do justice to the first license for mutual trade under the Dubrovnik Charter from 1230, issued by the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Asen II to traders from Dubrovnik, which granted them the right of free trade on the territory of the Bulgarian Kingdom.”
In 2010 trade turnover between Bulgaria and Croatia amounted to € 117.637 million, which is 10 per cent higher than in 2009.
