International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers





 
On 28 April 2011, trade union leaders, representatives of the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, the National Social Security Institute, the General Labour Inspectorate Executive Agency, and other organizations and institutions gathered in front of the headquarters of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria to mark the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers.
The President of the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Tsvetan Simeonov honoured the memory of the workers killed in occupational accidents on behalf of the largest employers’ organization. 
The President of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria, Mr. Plamen Dimitrov appealed to those present to bow their heads in memory of the workers who died in occupational accidents. 2876 Bulgarian workers died in occupational accidents, 1885 of them directly at their workplaces, only in the period 1990 – 2010, the trade union leader pointed out. Last year the number of tragic accidents increased.
After wreaths and flowers were laid before the memorial, an award ceremony began during which the Confederation gave out its special awards “Prometeya” for contribution to humanizing the working environment and improving the safe and healthy working conditions
